Volunteer Programme

Lily of the Valley has a vibrant volunteer programme where volunteers from all over the world commit to a minimum of 3 months working with the children and participating in the local Community projects programme.

What we offer:
  • An opportunity to enrich the life of a child infected or affected by HIV
  • All our volunteers are met personally at the airport and transferred to accommodation on site
  • Accommodation is provided in self catering three bedroom cottages. Volunteers provide their own food and cook for themselves.
  • Volunteers have free time to explore local South African highlights
Eligibility and Skills required:
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • There are no specific skills required to participate in this programme. However, qualification or experience in any of the following areas is beneficial:
    • Teaching
    • Medical/paramedical, particularly Occupation therapy, speech therapy
    • Youth work
    • Computers
    • Music
    • Technology
    • Arts and crafts
    • Counselling
  • An international driving licence is an advantage
  • A willingness to help wherever there is a need
  • Above all a love for children and a lot of patience
  • Lily of the Valley is a Christian based Care Centre and as such are alcohol, tobacco and drug-free zones. Volunteers are asked to respect this principle.
Possible Areas of Responsibility for Volunteers:
  • School: Nursery school, resource centre, homework supervision, Community Day Care centre
  • Medical: Accompanying sick children to hospital, routine clinic medication visits
  • Social: Up-dating Memory books for each child, assisting with letter writing, accompany children on outings.
  • Admin: General office admin, answer telephone, up-date files etc.
  • Recreation: Oversee Sports, outings, drama, choir, nature trails etc.
  • Clothing : General stock control, store room upkeep.
  • Toys: Refurbish broken toys, pack birthday packs, create party/Christmas packs. Mend bicycles. Develop craft area
  • Routine: Shopping, collect toys and clothing from donors, assist with maintenance of buildings and gardens etc.
  • Community Vegetable growing, sewing, woodwork, literacy classes, Projects health education, maintenance, computer school, Day Care Centre, Library, crafts, etc.
